Pulmonary Function Testing
When an employee is employed in a position which potentially exposes them to respiratory hazards it is important to monitor the employee’s lung function. One of the best ways to do this is to conduct a lung function test at the start of employment and to continue monitoring it throughout the individual’s employment.
The lung function test (also referred to as Pulmonary Function Test or Spirometry) can help in the early diagnosis of lung disease and help prevent further damage from occurring.
The lung function test can also help in identifying potential airborne hazards that would require further evaluation and treatment.
When there is an abnormal result the lung function test as well as a brief medical history pertaining to occupational and non-occupational exposures are sent to a physician for review to help determine if further testing is required and provide an opportunity to prevent further damage to the employees lung function.
